TRAVEL TO FRANCE THIS SUMMER MAY NOT BE ADVISABLE

French President Emmanuel Macron wanted to make some changes to the labour laws and his efforts are being resisted to the hilt by the labour unions and they have called for rolling strikes throughout the summer, when the travel is at a peak.
Two out of Five days there would be strikes that would halt the extensive and efficient railway system in France.
Air France has announced its own strikes.
On 30th March I am flying into CDG in Paris, the day Air France has announced a strike. If the air traffic controllers join, then CDG might be shut.
On the 4th April I have a flight from CDG but I will have to take a train on the 2nd, two days ahead of the flight so that I can be sure I will be at the airport in time for the flight as I would be in Bretagne.. rail strikes on 3rd and 4th.

As the French and the Parisians are well known for their arrogance, rudeness and lack of desire to help other people, stranded foreign travellers would have no recourse.

My advice is not to travel to France this summer or fly Air France or connect through Paris.
In May I had a chance to fly from Miami to Paris and then go by train to Brussels, I have chosen to fly to Tel Aviv and then after a couple fo days in Israel, will fly to Brussels.

BE WARNED, AVIOD FRANCE THIS SUMMER FOR ANY TRAVELS

A WALK ALONG THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF BRISTOW LIGHTHOUSE HOTEL

Fort Cochin has a special attraction for me, and Bristow Bungalow Hotel facing the Arabian Sea adds to the attraction. Each morning I go for a brisk walk along the seashore and each day I discover something new.
You may have eyes, but if you don't look you may not see.
This morning, there was the usual conglomeration of people, many of them doing their morning exercises, some rather comically, almost as if they were dancing. Fat muslim girls in hijab (the reason for their obesity?) are trying to walk off their fat, rather clumsily. Young and old, Hindu and Christian, the morning belongs to all of them. Very occasionally you spot a foreigners but they are obvious by their absence.
A few hearty souls were already wading into the sea, as i turned left from the hotel, seen in the back ground, on to the promenade by the Arabian Sea.
The sea was a little angry this morning, the day is predicted to be humid, perhaps there is a relation between the two.

occasionally I stand at the end of the water and so some Yoga asanas.
An extra large container ship passed us by. what are they carrying? where are they going? A liberian registered ship belonging to an Emirati company?
Who are the crewmen? most possibly Filipinos longing for Manila? or a Latino crooning a nostalgic song about unrequitted love left behind in the Colombian mountains/

I am rather fond of this plaque lying in a corner in a complete state of neglect, much like the history of Portugese in these shores,
and their Cristao language which was spoken until 2004!

I read aloud the inscription. I am unashamedly a Lusophile, I think of the remote parts of the Portuguese empire that I had visited:
Malacca, Malaysia; Syriam, Burma; Colonia , Uruguay; Porto Novo in Bein, Cabo do boa esperance, Africa del Sud..Acores, Maputo.. and of course Cochim..
Why not take advantage of Ayurvedic masssage while in he land of Ayurveda?
I am fascinated by the little shrines which ii scattered around
Cochin. This one from 1925
after quenching the thirst of this torrid day, it was good to observe the neglected Dutch Cemetery, similar in condition fo the Dutch cemetery in Malacca, Malaysia. The dutch history and the amicable dutch-cochin jewish relationship is well documented. Ezekiel Rahabi of "white" Jews was of Yemeni Origin who became very wealthy under the duth. He contributed to the rebuilding of the synagogue, his houses now are an art gallery David Hall and another one in Jewtown as you turn into the Synagogue street.

Fine examples of the houses from Dutch and British era (Cochin Club) can be seen around the Parade ground in Fort Cochin.
i stopped by the tribal girl from Rajasthan whose family greet me with a wide betel stained toothy smile, and of course I buy my wares from them: these bangles and ear rings will adorn the hands and ears among the Indians in the Amazonas, Everglades in Florida as well as the Omaha.

The heat was becoming unbearable, time to escape into the air conditioned comfort of Bristow Lighthouse Hotel.

MEETING A REMARKABLE INDIAN AT MY FAVOURITE HOTEL IN FORT COCHIN :BRISTOW LIGHTHOUSE HOTEL

MEETING A REMARKABLE INDIAN AT MY FAVOURITE HOTEL IN FORT COCHIN, NAMED AFTER THE ILLUSTRIOUS SIR ROBERT BRISTOW

Forty-eight hours after leaving my sisters house in Miami, with stops at airports in Philadelphia, Doha and Colombo, I stepped up to a very warm welcome by Ragesh the general manager of Bristow Lighthouse hotel. It was the home of Sir Robert Bristow who virtually re-built the port of Cochin and created the island of Willingdon.

VG a businessman from Bombay had fallen in love with the place and had leased the property from the Fort of Cochin and turned it into a Boutique Hotel of charm. The only hotel facing the Arabian Sea in Fort Cochin, with the ambiance of sea breeze and the jasmines, it is truly a lovely place to stay and attracts a sedate crowd of Europeans and Australians. A nice kitchen under the direction of Chef Rehman Vipin provides the best taste of Kerala cuisine, not the kind of “Indian “ food that you may encounter in London, New York or Melbourne.
Things happen for a reason, you are not smart enough to understand why, my Meskwakia Indian teacher had cautioned me years earlier.
I met a wonderful person tonight while having dinner at Bristow Lighthouse Boutique Hotel.
As I got into the Uber at Cochin International Airport I was still wondering, what I am doing here? Why am I here? My good friends will be very busy preparing for the Holy Week of Easter which they celebrate in al earnestness and thus will not have time for me The last Jew of Cochin will be scrounging around cleaning his house and synagogue and lament that no shank bone or lamb would be available.
What am I doing here?
Now I know why, as the Meskwakia would explain, you came to meet VG.

I headed straight to Bristow, determined to read and rest and relax the next four days ahead of me before I fly off to Paris and then on to Miami after a short stay.
The GM offered me an attractive room facing the ocean as well as an attractive half board.
At dinner I was informed that VG the owner was staying with his family on his annual visit to his beloved hotel/property. The GM was kind enough to introduce me to him.
I felt a very strong sense of spirituality, a connection with the universe when he came over to say hello. We briefly chatted and immediately dived deep into the philosophy of life, spiritual world. He left saying, I want to talk to you before I leave on Wednesday.

I looked forward to that and I went about my day of relaxing and having an Ayurveda massage and settling down to dinner at around 8 pm.
He and his wife entered the dining room, the family and other members of the entourage seemed to have stayed behind and we fell into a deep conversation.
(MM and I visited Cochin twice 2006 and 2007)
I found it delightful to recapitulate the story of reunion with MM as well as our visit to the Blind Astrologer of Chennai.
That story turned the conversation around, and our talk became very intimate, telling each other details of our lives.
It is as if I was given a chance to express certain things about my life, the absence of my birth mother and birth father from my life, my Jewish upbringing, my initial struggles in dedicating myself to humanitarian medicine and fluorescence I felt as Anthropology entered my life and my continuing connections with the American Indians. He expressed a desire to visit the Amazon River, when he goes to visit Machu Pichu.
You are wearing a dream catcher, he mentioned.

Yes, it is from the Amazon. Something within me, a spirit from the land of the Indians I am sure, prompted me, please have it, as I will be in the Amazon in May and I can easily replace it. He was aghast and reluctantly accepted. Please put it around my neck, he said in a kind tone. I asked him, please allow me to say a prayer for you, in the American Indian fashion and I began, thinking about my Omaha brother Mauricio!

Oh Great Spirit, take pity on me, this humble person, on whom you shower so much attention, please listen to me. I am with a wonderful man here who is connected to you as I am and I want you accept my prayers for him. I wish you grant him and his wife and his two sons long happy lives and bless them with the desires of their heart. You have listened to my prayers when I prayed for my sister in Miami and in Cuba, please take pity upon me and wish my friend and family well.
Emotions surged within as I was saying this, tears very nearly fell out of my eyes, I knew I had met a wonderful human being and his wife and I have become emotionally, culturally and spiritually richer by this contact.
The conversation returned to its pleasantness.
He asked me for my date of birth and my place of birth, which he could easily find in the hotel register and he began:
To my amazement, his first question was about a period in my life I was feeling lonely and professionally not productive and my humanitarian efforts floundering
He outlined as follows:
1980-1997 Fluorescence of yourself and your dreams
1997-2004   Lonely, isolated
2004-2024   productive active life
Another sixteen years of reflection and long life.

I found myself opening myself up to him and began telling things I had told no one else in Cochin, for example the reason to request a meeting with the blind astrologer of Tamoul Nadoo.
Stage I Indeed was the fluorescence of my professional life as a Social Science Oriented Humanitarian Medical Doctor. This period coincided with the magical life with TH in Jamaica and NPF in Havana.
Stage II saw the loss of both Jamaica and TH  and betrayal of NPF. I was mostly in Baracoa, isolated from what was happening in La Habana. The relationships with American Indians were not growing
Stage III the current stage
Reunion with MM was magical. Made wonderful friends such as MC in KL, and my circle in Cochin.  Attachment to Cuba deepened and Omaha tribe adopted me into their family.
Your life and travels are fascinating, you will continue to do this for more years and you will have a long life.
You are leading a full life, he continued in a kind tone, which I took to be a compliment coming from this successful businessman and with a heart oriented to culture, art and beauty.
I invited him to visit the Amazon. He wants to learn more about the methods of the successes of the Cuban Health Care system.
I will be in touch, he said as he rose to say good-bye.
I knew we would be
It was a beautiful sensation of having met a person with an innocence to his heart, curiosity to his intellect, blessed with a beautiful wife and family, who indirectly provided me an ambiance to relax at this lovely place by the Arabian sea.
I felt grateful for my life, my sisters in Miami, Havana and my brothers in Miami, Portland and my mother in Havana
Grateful for Australia which moulded my personality
Grateful for being accepted by American Indians and my family there especially Wehnona, Ashleen and Mauricio
Grateful for Cuba and its generosity of spirit and solidarity  with my desires to serve and acceptance to its social and professional milieu.

There are two other precious gifts for which I am grateful with almost every breath
The gift of October 24, 2009 and I am Jew loyal to my people and Eretz Israel

Pre dinner drinks and hors d'oeuvres  2 hours

after dinner drinks and coffee  . total time of dining: 7 hours
 BREAKFAST NEXT DAY AT CAFE
TIME SPENT 90 MINUTES

PS NONE OF THE THREE WERE ON THE TELEPHONE MAKING CALLS OR TEXTING

EATING IN MIAMI
TOTAL TIME AT THE RESTAURANT
ONE HOUR
ONE OF THE THREE PERSONS WERE  ON THE PHONE, TALKING, TEXTING, SOMETIMES TWO OUT OF THE THREE
FRESHLY MADE FOOD.
NO WINE JUST WATER NO PRE OR AFTER DRINKS OR COFFEE

There is another sort of eating in Miami that I do not recommend:
Fast Food joints which sell Junk Food: McDo, Burger King, KFC and their ilk
Equally bad food is served at Food Courts at the Malls, such as the Dadeland Mall.

It is possible to eat well in USA but it takes a little effort.
It is a credit to this country that in both restaurants every single worker was an immigrant!

THE PEDIGREE OF ISRAEL'S FOUNDING FATHERS

THE PEDIGREE OF ISRAEL’S FOUNDING FATHERS
When you think of the early years of the State of Israel, names like Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Levi Eshkol, Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres come to mind. They did not become leaders overnight, but it was as if they had been prepared for generations for the historic task of leading this incredible State from its birth through its infancy. All were visionaries, nurturing a sense of safety, security, caring for each other, advancing in all fields of science and technology and dreaming big.
It was Shimon Peres who said: If I have any regrets, it is that I did not dream even bigger!

Unlike many politicians of other countries, rich and poor, they did not arrive to lead with mediocre talent and lots of luck and connections. Sons succeeding fathers happens not only in North Korea but as well in Kenya, Congo, India, Malaysia just to name a few democratic states, not to mention autocratic Sheikdoms and Sultanates and Emirates.
Let us look at the genealogy of one such Israeli politician: Shimon Peres
His grandfather on his mother’s side was a graduate of the famous Volozhin Yeshiva, described as a “wise Jew proud and strong-minded”. Since the age of nine, Shimon read Dostoevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy and other Russian writers. Apart from reading the classic Jewish writers of that time, Shalom Aleichem, Mapu, Peretz, Mendele-Mokher Sefarim, he also read Russian Classics. Shimon’s paternal grandfather was an offspring of the Voloshin Yeshiva’s founder. He grew up well versed in the Talmud and could speak Hebrew, Yiddish as well as Russian and Polish.
You do not become a statesman of the stature of Shimon Peres overnight or not even in one generation!
I am reading the biography of Shimon Peres by Michael Bar-Zohar
It is an interesting, absorbing read and my opinion, respect and admiration for SHIMON PERES goes up with each page.

(photos of Technion taken during my recent visit)

Lucky to have had such great leaders at the time of the birth of the State of Israel and later on to lead the country to the state of innovation and science and technology and advances to such fabulous heights
dwarfing most of the Europeans, in the geographical region where it is, surrounded by States and Statesmen who cannot hold a wimpy candle up !
